Health Care and Disability, What a Joke.
I've been unable to work since July 30, 2007, I became sick and had to undergo numerous tests to get a diagnosis. It was September when I was told I had Hodgkins disease and by November I was going through treatment. I did receive good medical care but my short term disability insurance had run out and between the premiums and the cost of prescriptions I was going through my saving pretty fast. Although my insurance was good, it still was lacking because it only covered a small portion of my medications and the premiums were running me $70 a week.
By January of '08 I was broke but I had hopes of getting Social Security Disability in the next month or so. In the beginning of March I received a letter stating that I had been denied my disability benefits because the government doctors felt I should be ale to return to work by July so I would not be sick for 12 months so I didn't qualify, now my credit is in the toilet, my vehicle has been repossessed and I find myself on welfare getting medical assistance and food stamps, I'm happy for the medical help as I still have to go through radiation, and I'm currently being treated for some side effects like osteoporosis, neuropathy in my hands, extreme fatigue and lymphedimia, all stemming from chemotherapy.
With a single payer system I wouldn't be going through all of this stress, my phone rings from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. from creditors wanting their money and telling me to sell some of my belongings, and the only thing I have left of value is my 4 year old PC. My home is paid for (thank God) or I'd be out on the street and the best part is I have to wait over a year before I get a hearing on my disability appeal and if I win, I won't be eligible for Medicare for two years, and I'll make too much money to get medical assistance from welfare but not enough to purchase a policy because of a pre-existing condition, what is a person supposed to do?
I'm tired of MILLIONAIRES telling the working people that "socialized medicine" is bad and is a form of communism, when the real picture is that these people have money invested and are afraid that they'll lose money, and that's the bottom line, it's all about the money and forget about the people! I'm "mad as he**" because my tax dollars go to bail out an investment bank because too many MILLIONAIRES were losing money but I can't get any help from a system that I had paid into my entire working life and what little I would get should I receive my benefits in the future would be too much to get medical help but would be too little to buy insurance on my own, it's time to change the system!
