High Risk - HARDLY!
When I got a new job last year, I found that my company would not pay for health care. It seems to be the way of big business nowadays. So, I started looking at buying my own healthcare. My alma mater stepped up and now offers a group rate for alumni. I applied for the insurance, but was denied coverage in a letter stating that I had a heart condition "due to emotional or physical stress."
Over 7 years ago, I was treated for heart palpatations (and was insured at the time). The doctor did every test under the sun - and then some, but could not determine a medical cause. Because I was only 22 at the time, pysically active, and a healthy eater, my doctor and cardiologist suggested that it was natural and something that a lot of young women get. Eventually, the palpatations went away and I haven't had a problem since.
Yet according to this insurance company, I'd be a high risk case because, apparently, I'm very stressed! Let's just ignore the fact that I've never had another problem or that I'm young and active. According to them, I'm one foot in the grave already. I was so frustrated that a young, employed, healthy person like myself would be denied healthcare due to an assumption that the insurance company made.
It was like they were LOOKING for a reason not to cover me. I can't imagine what it's like for anyone who truly does have a severe ailment and can't get coverage. The healthcare system needs to change. We need reform NOW!
