From RN to unemployed and uninsured

Mechanicsville, Ia
Heathcare Status: Uninsured

I am seldom sick. I have many "chronic" conditions: Diabetes, asthma, 7 bad discs, sleep apnea, borderline personality disorder. I have been working as a nurse traveler for these past 6+ yrs, never missing more than one day off work per 6months or so, working 4-12 hr shifts per week. I then started to have problems with face pain back in Feb.

I only had 5 upper teeth left in my face; I thought the face pains must be related to my bad teeth. Having no dental insurance, I had to pay as you go to get my teeth pulled for plates. I had the first one pulled in Feb, the next 2 were pulled in March, plus they did the impressions for my plates then too, leaving me with only 2 teeth left in my upper jaw. I then started to get sick, really sick, super sick. I started with back spasms, my blood sugars way off, head aches and not feel well! It felt like I was having a "systems Failure", shortness of breath and so tired all the time. I was too sick to work!

The Doctor gave me 2 wks off work and ran tests to try to see why I felt so sick. I went ahead and got those last 2 teeth pulled and my plates were ready. I then started to have this full blown sinus infection. Within a week this infection was leaking through 2 of the empty tooth sockets! My local Doctor by then had expanded my note for work to one month off and had sent me to UIHC for special care. I was told it was a gram+ MRSA and put on antibiotics. I was also told that it had infection my upper jaw bone.

I have now been on antibiotics for 9 weeks, I had sinus sugery and still need oral surgery to clean out the infection in my upper jaw. I am no longer working... off work since 4-1-7. I am no longer insured. It ended 4-30-07. I am on some sort of Iowa insurance to go to the UIHC clinics, but am refused to be seen for anything except the sinus infection until Aug 8th when they gave me the intake appointment!

I am told the oral surgery that I need to save my life is not covered. I have had to go to "Free" clinics to beg for insulin and syringes, and blood pressure pills. I have had to go from working and paying my bills to having to beg for medical health care. I have had to go from helping others to needing help for my self! I have had to close any and all saving accounts and retirement funds and such! We as a family already are in depbt for medical bills. husband lost his left leg to MRSA, then had a cardiac by-pass. He then took a fall this year and broke his hip, in Feb! He has VA and Medicare with the large co-payments to be pd sometime....
